A Letter to the Game

22 years.

Early lessons filled with the joy of novelty.

Days that brought forth fresh experiences.

The sweet taste of victory. The agony of defeat.

My time with you made me stronger.

I strengthened my body.

I strengthened my mind.

We strengthened my family.

You taught me that not everyday is a good day

You taught me that a better day is always around the corner.

I learned from you that the true measure of a man lies in showing up and doing the work, even when it’s hard.

Even when it doesn’t feel good.

You taught me Discipline. Patience.

You taught me to love my brothers through accountability… and trust.

You taught me to care more.

You taught me not to take it personal.

But to always take it personal.

You taught me to be selfless with my team.

But selfish with my role.

You taught me to trust in God.

You gave me vision.

In our later years, you led me to discover that the beauty is in the journey.

You showed me that my climb, is my treasure.

You taught me that concentration on the action,

Is more powerful than concentration on the outcome.

The most important lesson I learned, however, did not come from your curriculum.

You see, I’ve recently found that I’ve been mistaken all along.

I thought you were teaching me how to play the game of football…

But actually you’ve been teaching me how to play the game of life.

My teacher, I thank you.

Forever Your Student,
